To achieve the best effect from this stitch, pick two, highly contrasting colors.
In the sample below, I have used worsted weight yarn, Cranberry as the MC, and Aran as the CC. I used an H hook.
Row 1 (foundation): With MC, ch 32, dc in 6th ch from hook. *Ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across to the end. Ch 4. Drop loop off hook and lay foundation aside (14 spaces make up the foundation).
Row 2: With CC, ch 30. Pick up and hold foundation with ch 4 to the upper right. Taking CC chain, weave it in and out starting from right side and underneath MC foundation, ending with last ch of CC in the middle of last sp in MC foundation. Make sure ch is not twisted and the v�s of the chain are facing you.

Pick up CC chain in hook and working in back of work on CC, make a dc in 6th ch from hook. *Ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc into next ch. Repeat from * across work. Ch 4 drop loop, do not turn work.

Row 3: Pick up MC loop, and working with and into MC, working in back of work, work 1st dc into first dc of Row 1. * Ch 1, sk next ch, and working in front of work, dc in next MC dc, ch 1, sk next ch, and working in back of work, dc in next MC dc. Repeat from * across to end. Hold CC ch 4 towards you, working last MC dc into MC dc. Ch 4, turn.
Below are pictures of the right, and then wrong sides of the work finished to this point.
Row 4 and following even rows: Pick up and work CC row, working all dc�s into CC dc�s in previous CC row working entirely behind work. Ch 4. Do not turn.
Row 5 and following odd rows: Pick up and work MC row, working every other MC dc behind work into MC dc�s in previous MC row, and every other MC dc in front of work into MC dc�s in previous MC row. Ch 4, turn.
